Mission San Miguel, San Miguel, CA. . –“This is your Mission – should you choose to accept it. –Take the ten dollars offered to you by PTO and turn it into a small fortune. –The money you raise will be donated to Mission San Miguel to help repair their earthquake damage.” So read the intriguing flyer. Five students from Lillian Larson Elementary DID indeed take up that challenge and impressively proved to all -- it can be done! Four students ( Travis Walters, Brittany Walters, Bryan Salazar, and Donny Miller) pooled their money and by means of a successful car wash and bake sale, as well as a raffle and mailed-out letter-pleas to friends and relatives nation-wide, raised $2025.00! in one month’s time! When fifth-grader Crystal Reuck heard about the challenge, she wanted to contribute too. –By selling cookies and lemonade, she raised $110.92. Thursday, June 10th, the youngsters presented a check to an amazed Fr. Ray Tintle who said: “These young people are an example to follow. –The Mission is NOT impossible. –Through their efforts, they have shown an appreciation of the art, culture and history of Mission San Miguel, and a desire to preserve it for future generations of youngsters like themselves.” PTO volunteer and Lillian Larson Booster Deborah Sowerby enthusiastically told all, “ This proves that kids CAN rise to the occasion.—Not only did they show their commitment to the Mission but also that there are ‘big hearts’ in the school.” For more information on Mission San Miguel, visit: www.missionsanmiguel.org or call (805) 467- 2131.
